Balancing groups

You can register and manage generation balancing groups on Tensor Cloud. This information is currently used for grouping your generation forecast files and in the future will be leveraged for communication with the OCCTO API.

Every balancing group has a balancing group ID, a responsible party, a grid area, contract classification number 1 and a list of assets associated with it.

Default balancing group

Any asset that is not associated with a balancing group will be considered to be part of the default balancing group. Any forecasts created for assets in the default balancing group will be grouped together.

The default balancing group is different from other balancing groups in that

  • it cannot be deleted
  • it cannot be assigned a different responsible party
  • it has no balancing group code
  • it does not have a fixed grid area

While daily forecasts will be generated for operational assets in the default balancing group, we recommend that you register custom balancing groups for your assets to ensure that they are grouped correctly and market integrations work as intended.

Registering a balancing group

To register a balancing group, open the Balancing groups page under the Balancing menu in the main navigation bar, then click the Add new button on the top right. You will have to provide the following information:

  • Balancing group name: This is a human-readable name for the balancing group. It is not used for any communication with the OCCTO API and you can change it at any time.
  • Grid zone: The utility grid zone in which the balancing group is located.
  • Balancing group ID: A 5-character unique code that legally identifies the balancing group. As we use this code to communicate with the OCCTO API, it must be unique within Tensor Cloud. If you are unable to register a balancing group with a specific code, it means that another Tensor Cloud customer has already registered a balancing group with that code. If you believe this was done in error, please contact Tensor support.
  • Contract classification number 1: This number is assigned by the Transmission System Operator, generally for each balancing group.
  • Balancing group responsible party: The balancing group responsible party for this balancing group. You can select from a list of responsible parties that you have previously registered in the Tensor Cloud settings.
  • Assets: A list of assets that belong to this balancing group. You can select from a list of assets that you have previously registered on the Tensor Cloud assets list. You have to select the balancing group's assets in the second step after providing above information.

Viewing a balancing group

Click the name of a balancing group in the balancing group list to view its details.

Balancing group overview

This tab will give you an overview of key information for the balancing group, including the balancing group code, the name of the responsible party, the grid area and a list of associated assets.

Editing a balancing group

Settings

To edit an existing balancing group, click the three-dot menu on the right side of the balancing group list and select Edit. You can change the balancing group name, the balancing group ID and select a different responsible party.

Note that changing the grid area of a balancing group requires removing all associated assets first.

note

You cannot edit the default balancing group. Any assets that are not associated with a custom balancing group will be considered to be part of the default balancing group.

Assets

You can add or remove assets to an existing balancing group under the Assets tab. To add an asset, click the Add new button on the top right. You can then select from a list of assets that you have previously registered on the Tensor Cloud assets list. To remove one or multiple assets, select them using the checkboxes on the left side of the list and click the Remove button on the top right.

Deleting a balancing group

To delete an existing balancing group, edit the balancing group and click the Delete balancing group button on the bottom right. This will remove the balancing group from Tensor Cloud, and unassign all assets and balancing group responsible parties.
